How to Use Deep Conditioner on Textured Hair

how-to-use-deep-conditioner-textured-hair

A practical guide to getting more from deep conditioner on textured hair, including sectioning, saturation, timing, heat, rinsing, and how often to use it.

Deep conditioning works best when technique matches the hair

For textured hair, the goal is not simply to apply a thick product and wait. Better results usually come from even saturation, thoughtful sectioning, enough water in the hair, and giving the conditioner time to coat the strands.

Start with clean, damp hair

Shampoo or cleanse first so heavy buildup does not block contact with the hair. Gently squeeze out excess water, but do not let the hair become dry before applying the conditioner.

Work in sections

Divide the hair into manageable sections and distribute the conditioner from mid-lengths to ends, then work the remaining product closer to the roots if the formula is intended for that use. Focus extra attention on the oldest, driest ends.

Use enough, not everything in the jar

The hair should feel evenly coated and slippery, not buried under a thick layer. More product does not automatically mean more conditioning.

Time and heat

Follow the product directions. Gentle warmth from a conditioning cap can make the experience more comfortable and may help some formulas spread more evenly, but longer is not always better.

Rinse and finish

Rinse thoroughly and detangle while the conditioner still provides slip if needed. Follow with leave-in, moisturizer, styling cream, gel, or oil according to your routine.
