Tender Crown, Breakage or a Widening Center? CCCA Awareness

A tender crown is information—not a diagnosis

Central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia, or CCCA, is a form of scarring hair loss that often begins around the crown and can spread outward. It is seen disproportionately in Black women. Only a qualified clinician can diagnose it.

Changes worth documenting

Pay attention to new tenderness, burning, itching, bumps, unexplained short broken hairs, reduced density, or a part that appears to widen from the center. Take clear photos in similar lighting and note when symptoms began.

Do not wait for a bald spot

Scarring alopecias can permanently damage follicles. Early dermatology evaluation matters, even when the area is still covered by hair. Ask whether the clinician regularly evaluates textured hair and scarring hair loss.

Keep the routine calm while seeking care

Avoid painful tension, scratching, harsh chemical services on an irritated scalp, and heavy layering that hides changes. Use gentle cleansing and low-tension styles that allow the crown to be seen and monitored.

What DSB products can and cannot do

Cosmetic shampoos, conditioners, and scalp serums may help with cleansing, lubrication, or the feel of dryness. They do not diagnose, prevent, or treat CCCA. Seek prompt care for spreading loss, sores, drainage, marked redness, or persistent pain.
