Jewelry Care 101: Gold-Filled, Vermeil, Sterling Silver & Plated Pieces

Jewelry care gets confusing because 'gold' can describe several very different constructions. Gold-filled, vermeil, gold-plated, sterling silver, and mixed-material pieces do not all wear or clean the same way. A few good habits protect the finish better than aggressive polishing ever will.

Know what you are wearing

  • Sterling silver is a silver alloy and can tarnish over time.

  • Gold vermeil is a substantial gold layer over sterling silver and benefits from gentle care.

  • Gold-filled jewelry uses a mechanically bonded gold layer and is generally more durable than standard plating, but it still deserves care.

  • Gold-plated and silver-plated pieces have a surface finish that can wear faster with friction, chemicals, and repeated moisture exposure.

The easiest care rule: jewelry goes on last

Apply lotion, fragrance, hair products, and makeup first. Let them settle, then put jewelry on. At the end of the day, remove jewelry before bathing, swimming, exercising heavily, or using household cleaners unless the piece's care instructions explicitly say otherwise.

Store pieces so they do not fight each other

Separate chains, gemstone pieces, and softer finishes. A pouch or divided box reduces tangling and abrasion. For sterling silver, an anti-tarnish storage method can slow oxidation between wears.

Clean gently

Start with a soft dry cloth. Avoid assuming every jewelry cleaner is safe for every gemstone, plated surface, or adhesive setting. When in doubt, follow the care instructions for that specific piece.
